3 Cut and Rearrange

Cut out the elements you wish to include in the painting. Move elements around until you are pleased with the look, then glue them to a piece of white paper. Make a photocopy of the entire composition.

4 Enlarge the Image and Add Important Details

Make another black-and-white photocopy of your composition and enlarge the composition proportionately. For instance, an 8″ × 10″ (20cm × 25cm) paper can be enlarged to a 16″ × 20″ (41cm × 51cm).

5 Sketch the Subject and Apply an Underpainting

Create a similar grid on your watercolor paper, then sketch the composition using the photocopy as your guide. Erase the grid lines once your sketch is complete.

Add water to Winsor Yellow, Scarlet Lake and Cobalt Blue, and mix until the colors are the consistency of cream. With your 2-inch (51mm) hake, thoroughly wet the paper with clean water, avoiding the upper right and center of the paper. Apply the yellow, red and blue as illustrated. Tip the paper until all the colors run together. creating a soft background.
